To us Mexico appears to be an exotic country of colour, vibrancy and diversity, which also manifests itself in its cooking traditions. Of course we are all aware of the importance of the different hot chilli peppers at the core of any true Mexican dish but it would be unfair not to give credit to all the other spices and herbs that help create the unique flavours at the heart of Mexican cooking, such as fresh coriander leaves, pepper, vanilla and epazote, just to name a few.

Mexican food is particularly exciting because it has been influenced by the culture of the Aztecs and the culinary customs brought in by the Spanish conquerors, infusing it with diverse aromatic deliciousness.
However, it sometimes can be a challenge to find these special Mexican spices and herbs, which are still not often readily commercially available here. Fortunately, most Mexican herbs are easy to grow at home and do well in large pots or boxes, on windowsills, the balcony or on the terrace.

For this seed kit we hand selected 4 classic kitchen herbs, most essential for traditional Mexican cooking:
  • Mexican basil (Ocimum basilicum) approx. 250 seeds
    Despite its famous namesake, Mexican basil only just about carries a hint of the Italian basil flavour. Its aroma is quite unique and includes notes of cinnamon and aniseed, with an underlying hotness.
  • Bolivian coriander/ pápalo/ quillquiña/ yerba porosa/ killi/ tepegua/ pápaloquelite (Porophyllum ruderale ssp. macrocephalum) approx. 10 seeds
    Bolivian coriander is a traditional Aztec herb, which resembles the flavours of leaf coriander and is an essential ingredient not to be missed in any salsas.
  • Wormseed/ epazote/ Jesuit's tea/ Mexican-tea/ payqu (Chenopodium ambrosioides) approx. 1000 seeds
    Wormseed adds a lovely lemony note to any bean dish and is very refreshing drunk as tea.
  • Cilantro/ leaf coriander/ Chinese parsley (Coriandrum sativum) approx. 200 seeds
    Cilantro has earned itself the nickname 'the parsley' of Mexican and Asian cooking. Always only ever add the freshly chopped leaves just before serving the food.
The seeds of each variety are packaged in a separate sachet.
