Early Harvest with Heritage
‘Yucon Chief’ is an exceptional sweetcorn variety developed at the University of Alaska. It traces its origins to a traditional maize variety grown by the Mi'kmaq people, combining historical diversity with modern plant breeding. Its defining feature is its compact cobs, measuring only around 10–12 cm in length, which are ready to harvest in just 55 days – significantly earlier than many other sweetcorn varieties. With a modest growth height of around 1 m, ‘Yucon Chief’ remains compact and sturdy, making it particularly well-suited to exposed sites, raised beds, and even container growing.
In terms of flavour, it delivers the classic sweetcorn taste, as it is not a “supersweet” variety. The best time to enjoy the cobs is when harvested at the milk stage – when they are especially juicy and sweet.

Siembra y cuidado
Sowing & Care of 'Yucon Chief'
Sow directly outdoors from mid-April at a depth of 2–3 cm. Allow approximately 45 cm between plants. As sweetcorn is wind-pollinated, it grows significantly better when sown in blocks rather than in single rows. Indoor sowing from April is also possible and can considerably improve yields. ‘Yucon Chief’ prefers a sunny position with humus-rich, well-drained soil, and requires consistent watering during cob formation.
A particularly rewarding method is the traditional companion planting with climbing beans, inspired by Native American practices: the sweetcorn provides support for the beans, while the beans enrich the soil with nitrogen. This creates a stable and fertile growing system that can further enhance productivity.
