Descripción
The white laceflower Orlaya grandiflora is an annual plant, distinguished by its delicate white umbels. The outer florets are significantly larger than the inner ones, giving each umbel a striking, radiating structure. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, white laceflower was once widespread across Europe, favouring calcareous, nutrient-poor soils. However, the intensive use of herbicides has largely displaced it from agricultural land, and it is now listed as a threatened species on the Red List.
Its airy growth habit is particularly notable, reaching heights of up to 60 cm. White laceflower makes an excellent companion for perennials, ornamental grasses, and other wildflowers. It also attracts numerous wild bees and hoverflies, which benefit from its nectar. Historically, the plant became known for its simple yet exceptional flower form as the 'Hellenstein Castle flower', having grown for many years in the gardens surrounding Hellenstein Castle.

Siembra y cuidado
Orlaya grandiflora is easy to cultivate and prefers a sunny place with well-drained soil. From March onwards, seeds can be started indoors, or sown directly outdoors from May. Germination takes approximately two to three weeks, during which the soil should be kept evenly moist. Once germinated, the young plants develop quickly and require little maintenance. Cutting back after flowering encourages repeat blooming and supports self-seeding.
Alternatively, white laceflower can be grown using the Cool Flower method. However, as it is more sensitive to frost in Germany than other Cool Flowers, it is advisable to sow in early spring in a sheltered location. For example, seeds can be sown in pots and the seedlings kept in a cold frame or frost-free area. Once the risk of severe frost has passed, the well-established young plants can be planted out. This method gives the plants a head start and results in earlier flowering, which is particularly beneficial if you are growing Orlaya grandiflora for use as a cut flower.
