The Yellow Scabious, botanically known as Scabiosa ochroleuca, is a captivating wild perennial that brings an elegant lightness to any garden with its soft yellow flowers. From July to September, its flat, plate-like blooms open, floating atop long, slender stems and providing a rich source of food for insects such as bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. Reaching a height of 60 to 80 cm, it integrates harmoniously into sunny rock gardens, wildflower borders, or naturalised plantings.
Its robust nature and adaptability make the Yellow Scabious an excellent choice for dry sites. Even poor, well-drained soil suffices, as its deep taproots allow it to access water efficiently. A particular highlight is its ability to self-seed: after flowering, it often propagates itself, making it a dynamic and sustainable addition to the garden. However, it remains easy to manage with selective pruning. Its natural, airy appearance pairs beautifully with other drought-tolerant perennials, such as lavender or globe thistle, creating a stunning visual effect.
