Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) – related to the artichoke, with silver-green leaves and edible leaf stalks. A delicacy in southern lands – almost forgotten in our own part of the world.
Oxheart tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) – very large, meaty tomato with few seeds. With its soft consistency and full-bodied flavour, it’s a real foodie favourite.
Candy-stripe beetroot 'Tonda di Chioggia' (Beta vulgaris) – also known as “Chioggia”. Visually stunning – keeps its distinctive red-and-white rings even when cooked.
Celtuce (Lactuca sativa var. angustana) – an Asian speciality with juicy, crunchy leaf stalks, great for wok dishes and salads.
Red orache (Atriplex hortensis) – an ancient spinach plant with vibrant purple leaves. Undemanding, high-yielding and looks great in the garden.
Pea 'Corne de Belier' (Pisum sativum) – early, resilient variety with sweet roundish peas. Loved for its high yields and delicate flavour.
Black salsify (Scorzonera hispanica) – winter-hardy root vegetable with dark skin and snow-white interior. Subtle, nutty flavour, great for cold dishes.
Autumn turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa) – historic, fast-growing root with a mild, aromatic flavour. Perfect for growing late in the season.
Butterkohl cabbage (Brassica oleracea) – tender, curly-leaved cabbage with a very mild flavour. Works well eaten raw or as a tender winter veg.
