Exotic Rarity from the Amazon

The 'Aji Charapita' is a semi-wild chilli variety from the tropical rainforest regions of Peru and is considered one of the smallest and most expensive chillies in the world. Its bright yellow fruits measure only 0.5 to 1.5?cm in diameter, yet surprise with their intense heat and fruity flavour.

Despite their tiny size, Aji Charapita chillies develop a remarkable heat level of 50,000–100,000 Scoville – comparable to habaneros. Their flavour is truly distinctive: citrusy, fruity, and slightly floral. These tiny pods are intensely aromatic and widely used in Peruvian cuisine – whether fresh, dried, or as a fiery sauce. When dried, their flavour resembles that of habaneros, though they are significantly more compact.

As a tropical plant, Charapita requires plenty of warmth, especially during germination. It grows in a compact, bushy, and well-branched habit and produces an abundant yield of small fruits over many months. Thanks to its perennial growth, it can be overwintered and may live for several years – a true gem for chilli growers and enthusiasts of rare varieties.

Sowing and Care of Aji Charapita

Propagation: Start indoors from mid-January to the end of February.
Germination temperature: Optimal: 25–28?°C; germination time: approx. 7–14 days.
After germination: Provide a bright location at around 20?°C.
Transplanting: From mid-May after the last frosts – harden off plants beforehand.
Location: Sunny, sheltered from wind, in nutrient-rich soil with good drainage.
Care: Water regularly (do not allow to dry out), avoid waterlogging. Feed generously!

Aji Charapita combines the character of a wild type with high yields and intense aroma – ideal for enthusiasts of unique chilli varieties.
